Oromo – A Nation at Risk–PRESS RELEASE- September 5, 2011

               Human Rights Violation in Ethiopi

Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa

                                  (HRLHA)

       PRESS RELEASE September 5, 2011

Oromo – A Nation at Risk

As part of the most recent violence against citizens in general and the Oromo people in particular, which has already resulted in the incarceration of hundreds of Oromo nationals, dozens of other Oromos have been extra-judicially arrested and sent to prison in the past month August by the Ethiopian Government security forces.

Although this act of violence by the EPRDF-led Ethiopian government against its own people is persistent and the number of victims is always growing, HRLHA has managed to obtain the names and some identities of the following individuals through its correspondents:

  1. Mr. Caala Hailu, a professor/teacher at AdamaUniversity, arrested in Adama on the 29th of August, 2011,
  2. Mr. Daadhi Galaan, an artist and singer, arrested on August 27, 2011 in Adama,
  3. Mr. Laggasaa Detti, arrested on the 28th of August, 2011 at a place called Ginchii on his way to Addis Ababa from Gindabarat, a town in Western Showa,
  4. Mr. Mulugeta Riqutuu, a teacher, a Member of Mecha and Tulama welfare Association executive Director,  arrested along with Mr. Sisay Sarbessa  on the same date at the same time and place,
  5. Darajje Daballi, student atAdamaUniversity, arrested in NajjoTown, western Oromia, just as he arrived at his parents’ home in the town for his summer vacation,
  6. Zemachu Mekonnin, student of Adama University, arrested and taken away on the 27 of August, 2011, as he arrived at his parent’s home in Dambi Dollo similarly for his vacation,
  7. Gammachis Yoseef, another student fromAdamaUniversity, arrested around the beginning of August,
  8. Sisay Sarbessa, third year student of Information Technology at Addis Ababa University, Member of Mecha and Tulama welfare Association,
  9. Garbaabaa Gaaddisa, an employee of Oromia Bureau of Water Develoopment, arrested at his place of work,
  10. Gachana Aseffa fromWest Shewazone,
  11. Abdisa Sori arrested in Ada’a Barga District,
  12. Sirnessa Abera arrested in Ada’a Berga District,
  13. Mesay Girma, driver with others whose names is not identified yet.

Although all of these Oromo nationals were arrested at the beginning by security agents ofOromiaRegionalState, HRLHA has learnt that they have later been handed over to the federal agents for reasons that are not clear to families of the victims and/or other interested groups. Besides, other than the unconfirmed reports that these Oromo nationals are being held at Ma’ikelawi Central Office of Investigation, none of the families or friends of those victims have been able to communicate with any of them. There are also reported cases of tortures among those Oromos, particularly against Student Zemachu Mekonnin.

As a result, HRLHA is highly concerned about the safety and well being of those victims of government’s extra-judicial actions.

  Zemachu Mekonnin

Zemachu Mekonnin

Therefore, the HRLHA calls on the Ethiopian EPRDF Government to allow the due process of law to take place, if those individuals are really suspected of committing any kind of crime; and, if not to release them unconditionally.

HRLHA also calls up on local, regional, and international diplomatic and human rights agencies to continue exerting pressures on the Ethiopian government to stop harassing and intimidating its own citizens especially for attempting to exercise their fundamental political rights which are believed to have been granted by the country’s constitution.

HRLHA would also like to take this opportunity to bring to the attention of local, regional, and international communities the previous similar cases of extra-judicial arrests and imprisonments, as a result of which hundreds of Oromos and nationals of other ethnic groups are languishing behind bars.

HRLHA is a non-political organization which attempts to challenge abuses of human rights of the peoples of various nations and nationalities in the Horn of Africa. HRLHA is aimed at defending fundamental human rights including freedoms of thought, expression, movement and organization. It is also aimed at raising the awareness of individuals about their own basic human rights and that of others. It has intended to work on the observances as well as due processes of law. It promotes the growth and development of free and vigorous civil societies.

TPLF confused: Oromummaa vis-à-vis Oromo Liberation Front

Qeerroo Report, Finfinnee, 3 September 2011

Having continued with its aggressive brutal attack on Oromo people, TPLF government securities are arresting pro-democracy Oromo nationalists from all zones of Oromia. In order to block the disseminations of news regarding its brutality, the government has also disconnected all telephones and internets in many parts of the region. Because of the fear they have towards the intensified pro-democracy movements, the government started arresting and attacking opposition political party leaders.

The government is allegedly accusing the opposition leaders with false accusation-suspected linkage with Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). VOA Addis Ababa correspondent Peter Heinlein reported that these prominent opposition politicians charged with having ties to the newly “outlawed OLF”, which is fighting for independence for Oromos, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group. The detained pro-democracy nationalists insisted that being member or linked to OLF is not crime rather it’s the indication of nationalism for Oromummaa. Hence, they have firm stand that detention and torture will never stop them from the movement in search for freedom and democracy.

Of the following are among the Oromo detainees locked at Maikelawi by Federal TPLF government “Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force” on August 02,10,23 and 28, 2011:

  1. Zemachu Mekonin student form Adama University
  2. Gerbaba Gadisa  Oromia water resource
  3. Gamachis Yosef , student form Adama university
  4. Lagese Deti, from Ginci town
  5. Mulugeta Riqitu  from Addis Ababa
  6. Sisay Sarbessa, student from Addis Ababa University
  7. Mr Olbana Lelisa, Oromo People’s Congress
  8. Gachana Ararsa, from West Shewa province
  9. Habtamu, from Ginchi district
  10. Abdissa Sori, from Ada’a Barga district
  11. Sirnessa Abera, from Ada’a Barga district
  12. Mesay Girma, driver
  13. Sonbe, student
  14. Dadhi Galan, singer from Bishoftu city
  15. Mr Bekele Gerba, deputy chairman of the Oromo Federal Democratic Movement (OFDM) and member of the executive committee of Medrek.
  16. Chala Hailu, lecturer from Adama University
  17. Asfaw Waltajjii from west Shawa
  18. Biraan Taddese, from west Shawa
  19. Baqala Harqasa from west Shawa
  20. Gamachu Qajela from west Shawa
  21. Dhaba Giree from west Shawa
  22. Lama Motuma from west Shawa
  23. Tokuma Mitiku from west Shawa
  24. Tasfaye from west Shawa
  25. Siifan from west Shawa
  26. Daraje from west Shawa

All were charged with terrorism, in link with Oromo Liberation Front. We promise to keep you updated with the news and lists of detainees in other provinces and districts of Oromia.

Morever, in Wellega, Horro Guduru Province and Harar Hirna Town because of the clash between Oromo youth and police forces, a large number of Federal TPLF government securities are being taken to the different districts in the province in order to use aggressive force against these pro-democracy and freedom Oromo youths.

The struggle shall continue and the oppressor will fall!

Time and Liberation

                                                                    By Wahima Raaso

Liberation straggle is not easy; it took time to achieve it! But in all cases it only requires very strong determination of people. With out commitment and sacrifice, liberation is just a dream. Although all African countries have been under European and Abyssinian colonizers for some time, today almost all of them are free countries. One shame thing is that when all African countries were liberated from colonialism, Oromia one of such a distinct land and people is still under the same savage colonizers called Abyssinian. Let us look at the very resent African achievements. Oromos are still not fighting fiercely at all time and all places, but the following countries are greatly an example to our straggle to liberate our country. Get organized, take individual responsibilities and mission at least to accomplish one thing in your life time. Write a new history in Oromo’s long over due liberation quest. Make your world and your children’s free of subjugation, inferiority, ethnic-apartheid, imprisonment, fear, torture, poverty, illiteracy, hunger, disease, unemployment by fighting TPLF right now.

Tegrian freed in 17 years

Oromos?

As of now, we are slaves for Abyssinian kings and military occupiers with out any political and economic control over our own lands. When are we going to liberate our country Oromia?

This question must be answered by this generation, we have to stop being stupid and stand up. Resist the military occupation everywhere, every time, individually, group wise, by all means. NOW!

A wave of mass arrest has shaken Oromia

(Qeerroo, Finfinnee, 2 September 2011) The Ethiopian government, who has lost hope on the Oromo people, has resorted to mass arrest and mistreatment of the civilians including teenagers and women’s.

According to reliable sources and our contacts, the government has already put in place night curfew, hindering any civilian movement and social activity in western Oromiya. What is more, any kind of grouping is prohibited and if anyone is found in group an order has been passed for arrest and imprisonment. This week countless Oromo youth are being dragged to prison cells and these with genuine critics are also being hunted and through to jail.

According to our sources from Central Oromiya, a Board Member of Mecha and Tullema Self Help Association Mr. Legese Detti, has been abducted in Ginchi, their properties confiscated and through to jail while returning from the Garanfasa festival held in Gindeberet.

In a similar line of incident, Mulugeta Riqitu, a teacher and also a Board Member for the Mecha and Tullema Self Help Association and Sisay Sarbessaa, a student at Addis Ababa University and a member for the Culture and History wing of Mecha and Tullema Self Help Association was arrested. Even if the District Court released them free, the Federal Police have taken the official from the regional police and imprisoned them again in the notorious Ma’ikelawi prison on the 29 of August 2011;

Even if their crime is nothing less than their identity; the dictatorial regime has alleged that Mecha and Tullema Self Help Association have no legality and they are acting under non existing organization. Despite the Association officials’ provision of documents attesting their legality and a copy of their renewed report to the Ministry of Justice, the security official have given a deaf ear to their plea and thrown them to the notorious Ma’ikelawi jail, where thousands of Oromo are languishing and serving inhuman torture. According to our informants their current situation are unknown but it was clear that they have been so far denied of any legal aid from their lawyers.

What is more a renowned Oromo artist from Bishoftu, Dadhi Galan, Masaay Girmaa (driver)  and Sonbee (student) have been abducted and through to Ma’ikelawi on the night of 27 of August 2011. In Adama town a lecturer at the Adama University, Mr Caalaa Hayilu and many other unidentified individuals were also abducted on the 29 of August 2011.

From West Shoa zone, Oromia, Gaachanaa Ararsaa,  and Mr Habtamuu from Giincii district , Mr Abdisaa Soorii  and Mr. Sirneessaa Abarraa, from  Adaa’aa Bargaa, have been similarly abducted by the security agents with out any court order.

Mr. Bekele Gerba, an English teacher at Addis Ababa University, a member of the executive committee of Ethiopia’s main opposition coalition, Medrek, and deputy chairman of the Oromo Federal Democratic Movement (OFDM) and Olbana Lelisa, Chief of office for of the Oromo People’s Congress were both detained after meeting an Amnesty International delegation and foreign reporters investigating rights abuses, their party said late on Wednesday.

Mr Gerba was also accused of talking to the recent BBC investigative reportage, which uncovered the abuse and mistreatment on people who doesn’t belongs to the repressive governing party.
